The Many Surprising Uses of Botox

A Botox injection.

Botox debuted on the cosmetic marketplace in 2002 to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Since then, it has become more affordable and popular than ever before. In fact, in 2023 more than 8.8 million people used Botox, and it is now the number one minimally invasive procedure in America.

But did you know that Botox can be used for purposes other than just anti-aging? It’s true! It now has many FDA approved uses for other common ailments. Here are just a few.

Migraine Headaches

Botox has been used to treat migraines for many years, and research from 2019 and 2022 found that it can help reduce inflammation, migraine severity, and even migraine frequency. If you suffer from these debilitating headaches more than 15 days per month, Botox may help.

Hyperhidrosis

Do you sweat a lot, even when you’re not feeling particularly hot? You could be suffering from a condition called hyperhidrosis. Botox can help clear up excessive sweating for six to twelve months.

Strabismus

Strabismus is a condition where your eyes don’t align with each other while looking at an object. Botox has been successfully used to temporarily target the eye muscles responsible for this. Results usually last between three to six months.

Depression

Surprisingly, Botox has been found to reduce the effects of depression if injected between the eyebrows.

Cervical Dystonia

Cervical dystonia causes involuntary contractions in the neck muscles which can cause head and neck pain.

Overactive Bladder

Botox has been found to reduce urgency and incontinence by temporarily preventing your bladder muscles from contracting by blocking the release of the brain chemicals acetylcholine and ATP and increasing the release of nitric oxide which relaxes your bladder.

Remember, Botox has been a beautiful and effective solution to fine lines and wrinkles for over 20 years, but it has come a long way and today boasts many other useful-yet-lesser-known benefits!
